Great Wall Marathon

Sharon Shi:

The lead up to exams can be a very busy time at work and so this year, a few of us decided to give ourselves another, different challenge for this period.  Paul had done the Great Wall Half Marathon run last year and convinced Stuart, myself and Lorna (not an RDFZ teacher) to train for this year’s marathon.  The convenience of the running track right outside our teaching building at RDFZ helped us squeeze in training sessions after work and we explored new parts of Beijing in longer runs at the weekend.  I've lived here 7 years and had no idea how many wonderful paths there are along canals and in parks all around Beijing!  Apart from Paul we were all new to long distance running and so his advice helped us a lot although it was a steep learning curve for us.  I got injured early in my training and had to have some physiotherapy which taught me a lot about my body and running too.

The Great Wall half marathon was at the Huangyaguan section of the Great Wall.  I have been to the Great wall many times, but never to this section, so getting to see a new bit of the wall was a great bonus!  We had beautiful weather for the run, which was challenging but fun.

After the run, we rewarded ourselves at a hot springs spa, for just 268 RMB we had 24 hour access to pure relaxation.  By the end Paul had convinced us all to sign up again next year!  Not satisfied with his achievements, he's now trying to convince us to do another run in November...we probably will because as much as we moaned through the training, I think we all enjoyed it!

Paul Awetry:

Most American, long distance runners dream about the chance to run a race as far away and as exotic as the Great Wall of China Marathon.  For 2 years now, that dream has been a reality.  Last year I ran alone.  This year, I was accompanied by 3 great friends.  Next year we hope to have a whole RDFZ Team running the Great Wall.
